Milan - Lake Como - Switzerland

Hello I am in early stages of sorting out transportation and logistics of a trip and I would like some feedback on this portion of a trip that would be 4-6 weeks in total either in May or June 2023. No kids, middle aged active couple wide interests history, scenery, food, etc.

Looking at flying into Milan for 3-5 days, then train to Lake Como 4 days (relax/rest) and on to Switzerland via train.

My question is; have you used these trains and are they scenic/relaxing? Is it a good way to travel, or would I be better off to table this lake Como dream for a different trip when we’d instead stay south/in Italy?

It feels like the trains from Lake Como into Switzerland towns could be a good idea but I really can’t tell. Any advice or suggestions welcome!

We used a car for this itinerary but from research, it is a good combination.

We have taken the train from Switzerland (Lugano actually) to Como (about 40 minutes by train), then stayed in Bellagio for several days. We took the slow ferry up from Como and the hydrofoil when leaving, walking to and from the train statin. When we left, we took the train from Como to Venice (connecting thru the main station in Milan). We much prefer trains as renting a car has always been problematic and stressful for us. It's definitely personal preference however as to renting a car or taking the train. If you are staying near the train station and travel light, with no mobility issues, the train works for us. We don't like to worry about parking, ZTL zones, tickets arriving after our trip or dealing with rental car companies not in our native language. We found that the trains in Switzerland (we've spent about 6 weeks total there traveling exclusively by train) to be the gold standard, meaning the trains are spotlessly clean, on time to the minute and very easy to navigate, generally relaxing and scenic. Italy trains (traveling about 3 weeks over 2 different trips) are way better than Amtrak in the US, however not as clean, not as efficient, scenic unless going into or out of a big city, as most trains in Switzerland. And yet we've almost exclusively taken in train especially in Central and Northern Italy.

Milano Centrale to Como is about 40 minutes by train or to Varenna on lake Como is about an hour. Also, both towns are reasonable times on the train to many parts of Switzerland depending upon where you are going next. I can't speak to the weather that time of year as we were on Lake Como in early September.

I would say after lots of museums, art and the big city of Milan a few days in the smaller villages and towns around Lake Como would be wonderful. Have a great trip.

If your Lake Como base is Varenna or nearby ( like Bellagio) you have a wonderful opportunity to take the most scenic train ride into Switzerland. The Bernina pass route is the only train line that goes over the Alps rather than under them in at least one tunnel. Most of those tunnels are deep and loooong.

There is a named scenic train, the Bernina Express, that takes this route, but you can also ride a regular hourly regional train that uses the same tracks, as we did. From Varenna, you take the train north to the border at Tirano, 1.5 hours away. You are on the same train that you rode to reach Varenna from Milano Centrale, just continuing the journey. At Tirano you change to a northbound Swiss train. You climb the pass and once on the other side the train stops at a couple of times at mountain inns before reaching the charming town of Pontresina. That should be your goal for the first night (;and several more).

Lola, “jumping in” to ask where we should purchase ticket for the Varenna-Tirano” route. The station at Varenna is often unmanned. We will be in Milan a couple of days and then 3 days in Varenna before heading to Switzerland.

The train operator is TreNord, but I bought our tickets ahead from Trenitalia, and printed them out. We traveled southbound (Tirano to Varenna) but that shouldn’t make a difference. Be sure to enter the starting station as Varenna-Esino.

You do not have to register with Trenitalia; you can “continue as a guest”. The tickets cost €7,40. I believe they are “pre-validated” but good for any regional train on the specific date you choose.

If you have any trouble with Trenitalia, you can also buy them from TheTrainline for $8.52.

The Bernina Express from Tirano, Italy to Zurich, Switzerland is amazing. The train ride is approximately four hours long. Our train made a quick photo stop at St. Moritz. The windows are panoramic so you can see everything. Switzerland is beautiful and the vistas along the way are breathtaking.
