Milan + Lake Como + Something Alps + ???? Your help please!

Hello. Flying into Milan Sunday May 26, and out of Milan Thursday morning June 6. Likely staying at the Hilton Milan due to points. Two travelers, 60 and 62, in pretty good shape. Adventurous, love culture, arts, museums and of course, food! Yes, I have Rick's Book: Milan & the Italian Lakes District. We're starting to plan our itinerary. Thinking due to jet lag, we will probably leave Milan on Wednesday morning, and head to Lake Como. Everything I'm reading is not to stay or base there in Como. But rather many love Varenna. Is three full days in the area adequate, like leave Sunday morning? Now for the Alps part. I do want to see them, go into them, and I'm reading the Bernino Pass Train is the way to do this. We are not opposed to training to a city in Switzerland, staying the night, and then returning to Italy the next day, Monday Any suggestions here? Or, doing a one day in and out trip is an option. Then of course, comes what to do with the remaining time, needing to get to Milan on Wednesday night at the latest, for a Thursday noon-ish return trip to the states. As of right now, planning on training into and out of Milan, but are open to renting a car if necessary. Thanks for any suggestions!

One last question, is it worth it to go a little out of the way to visit Bologna?

We were just in Milan in October. We only did a day trip to Como and that was plenty for us. We took the train from Milan to Varenna, ferry to Belagio, ferry to Como, and then train back to Milan. 1 day was plenty in that area for US. In Milan, we also stayed at the Hilton and it was fine and really close to the train station. After we left Milan, we took the train to Zermatt and saw the Matterhorn for two nights. We wanted two nights there in case the weather was bad one day. We really enjoyed Zermatt after being in Milan.
