We are four adult travelers flying into Milan for four or five days in Cinque Terra and then on to Florence and Tuscany. We are debating whether to take the train or a rented car from Milan to La Spezia. The train takes 4 and 1/2 hours, but I am thinking it might be worth it not to have to worry about a car in Cinque Terra. Any suggestions on which to choose? Thank you. Michael
I would do the Train. Seems I have seen 3 hours from Milan to Monterosso (not 4.5 hrs)
Any reason folks choose not to take the train from Milan directly to Monterosso (instead of La Spezia)? I keep look at the Trenitalia site and they have direct trains to Monterosso.
A car to Le Spezia is doable. Do not attempt to drive into any of the villages unless you love white knuckle driving on hairpin turns with 1 1/2 lanes and a sheer drop off - and then have to manuver when meeting a car in the 1 1/2 lanes.
Been there - done that - and won't again!!! Next trip to Chinque Terra will find us accessing towns via train or boat from La Spezia!!!!
We took a 3 hour train from Milan to Monterosso (via Genoa) and then a commuter train a few more minutes down the line to Vernazza. Easy, cheap and no car to worry about.
