I need information about staying only one night in Milan before taking a train to Varena. Can you give me a suggestion of a quiet, clean, hotel near the train.

Hotel Cristoforo Colombo metro is at corner few steps away beautiful clean modern hotel with old world charm and great customer service!

Hotel Berna and Hotel Garda are both within about a five minute walk from Milano Centrale, so either one of those would be good.
However, one question. I assume you're arriving in Milan after an international flight? What time does your flight arrive? If you arrive at a reasonable time, you can easily travel to Varenna straight away, as the trip is only about an hour. No need to spend money on a hotel in Milan.

I've been happy at the Berna annex. Breakfast at the main hotel across the street was well worth turning up for.
