Wanted to get some input on Milan, Italy. We have a few days prior to our cruise out of Chioggio Port and thinking about spending time in Milan .... any input would be appreiated.
I am not a fan of Milan, but I’m not crazy about cities in general. I’m not into fashion or anything trendy. That said, I loved seeing The Last Supper (tickets must be purchased well in advance), and the Duomo is spectacular. I think it’s worth one or two nights.
Milan is very close to Lake Como, which is beautiful and relaxing and a wonderful place to get over jet lag (not sure if that will be an issue for you). You can take the train to Varenna and stay there, or you can ferry from there to Bellagio and stay there. I loved staying in Varenna. Other people prefer Bellagio, but it was a little too upscale for me.
Thanks for you reply.... i will investgate
I agree with History Traveler. While it is not on the same level as Rome, it is an interesting city with a number of great attractions. For some reason, some people like to rip on Milan but that is undeserved. I loved the Galleria with a McDonald? That has to be one of the most pricey locations. And the cathedral is (I think) the fourth largest in the country. Don't over look the roof tour. And then there is the whole opera complex. You can easily spend two or three full days in Milan.
Milan's also full of Art Nouveau architecture.
Not a huge fan of Milan in general but the Duomo is definitely a must see if you decide to go. My favorite area; however, is the canal area!! Not far from the center (via train) and it is absolutely lovely to stroll about, eat & shop. Very different vibe from the city center.
Like Frank and History Traveler I like Milan. The Galleria Vittorio Emmanulle II is a stunning piece of architecture and very fun to walk around. The Sforza Castle includes an extensive museum of art and artifacts. The aforementioned Duomo and Last Supper are unique. The Ambrosiana Pinacoteca is one of my favorite museums. The Parco Sempione is a lovely spot to walk as you recover from jet lag. And for people watching you can't beat the Quadrilatero D'Oro, where the high end stores are located.
I also really enjoyed my time in Milan. We did a walking tour to see the Last Supper and saw some other interesting churches. La Scala is also a beautiful building to visit. The Pinocoteca Ambrosiana has an interesting collection including Da Vinci paintings, Lucretia Borgia's hair, and Raphael's charcoal drawing of School of Athens. Everywhere you go they will feed you ham.
The Milan Duomo is the third largest church in the world (the first two being St. Peter's and the new cathedral at Aparecida, Brazil). I think that Milan could be a world class tourist attraction, but being in the same country as Rome, Florence and Venice makes Milan look less than its worth. A possible Milan con is that the city is not much compact so some walking or metro run is necessary between sights.
We spent 2 nights in Milan 2 years ago, and could easily have spent 3. Many many restaurants. The Naviglio (canal district) was a fun evening. The Duomo is great, along with the museum, and the roof is a must-see. The apertivo culture is great there - you get the drink and a little snack. We went to Castle Sforzana for a day, and it was a parade of great stops. We did not do the Last Supper.
I concur with Milan-lovers here. One add - the Brera neighborhood is a great place to wander through cute streets and see galleries, shops and restaurants. Sit and people watch. Use “Bar Brera” to find it on your map - but eat someplace else!
