I have a day in Milan, on my own, before joining a tour at the Milan airport. I'm trying to decide whether to stay near the airport or in Milan. Is it easy to get back and forth between the airport and the city center?
Hi Kathleen, Milan has 3 airports, chances are you're going to be using MXP. There are shuttle buses and trains from MXP, takes 40-50 minutes. You might be using Linate, again easy transportation.
If you stay near the Central Train station, and I would for only one night, it's very easy to take the subway to the Duomo area and have a good look around there. Also suggest the Sforza castle for an excursion. And of course there is the window shopping for beautiful Italian style of all kinds, not just clothing.
Actually staying around the Cardona station is more convenient. Only 30 minutes from the airport by train and closer to Doma and central Milan. You could walk it.
Stay in Milano and enjoy the city's amenities. We like Milano and we realize it is not on the top of everyone's list. Take the Milan Shuttle and you will be downtown in about 50 minutes. We always stay at the 4 star Hotel Berna located about 400 meters from Stazione Centrale on Via Napo Torriano 18. You can check out Berna on venere.com and tripadvisor.com for pricicing, other hotel choices, map location, and client reviews. Buon viaggio,
I would stay in the city, as there's nothing interesting to see near the airports. I'm guessing that by "Doma," Frank means the Duomo, which is indeed amazing. You can go up on the roof and wander around for some spectacular photo opportunities. And there's tons of people-watching opportunities along the main drag between the Duomo and the Sforza castle. Most of Milan is fairly ugly, but that section of it is very nice. And of course, there's the Last Supper.
Thank you all. I've never been to Milan so it's great to have expert advice. Kathleen
We will be in Milan one night after the end of our ETBD trip, before heading home. I have seen referrals like RB's to Hotel Berna, but they have a two night minimum when we will be there and are a little more than we wanted to spend. Is anyone familair with Hotel Lancaster? It is well rated on TripAdvisor. It is not near the train station, but it seems to have decent transportation access. Any other suggestions for a modest hotel for one night?
Mark, there are dozens of hotels on the same street as Hotel Berna, you can find many at booking.com in the train station area - all price ranges. I stayed at Hotel Bernina (I don't think the two are related) and it was very reasonable, but a little dark. The staff is quite helpful. Last year I paid about 50 euro for a single.
