Milan in early March

We will be traveling in early March to Milan and want to take day trips probably to Como, Venice and Florence. Wondering about traveling to the Amalfi coast for the weekend, or other suggestions. What is the best way to travel from Milan to Amalfi and should we take a tour of the area/ where to stay? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Laurie: Per Mapquest.com: Milan to Lake Como is about 45 minutes. Milan to Venice is 170 miles. Venice to Florence is 158 miles
Florence to the Amalfi Coast is about 310 miles, and you have to go thru Rome and Naples to get there. If you're wanting to take day trips out of Milan, only Lake Como is a good day trip. If at all possible, you might want to book stays in Venice and Florence separate of Milan. The Amalfi Coast is on the other end of Italy, and is relatively hard to get to. Save it for another trip.

By train it's about 2 hours from Milan to Florence one way. Milan to Venice is approximately the same length of time. If you want to do either as a day trip it's possible but you won't have a lot of time. If you decide to go, take a train as early as you can and come back to Milan with the last Frecciarossa train. You can possibly squeeze 10 hours on the ground. Amalfi Coast is almost 2 hours south of Naples and Naples is, at best, about 5 hours south of Milan with the fastest trains. Flying to Naples might save you a little time, but not much, once you include the airport transfers and security procedures. If you can't spend at least 3 nights in the Amalfi Coast, that's too far to bother.
