Milan in 3 hours?

Hi all,

We're staying with friends in Genova and want to stop in Milan for a few hours before catching up with one of Rick's tours in Venice.

Is 3 hours enough to see Milan?

NO! More like one full day from early morning to late evening to say the least. You can spend three hours at the Duomo. You have to treat youself to go to Pecks for a cappuccino as well. The Last Supper is also a must see. Don't forget the fashion district. Maybe you should plan on leaving Genova a day earlier.

Many might say yes, as Milan, to me, gets a "bum rap." It is a "working city" but there's still plenty to see. I ALWAYS enjoy my visits to Milan and I often find new things to see each trip!

So I guess I would respond to your question by saying NO - not enough time to see MILAN in three hours...

But if you set your priorities and choose specific locations (1 or 2), Milan is on the way to Venice - so why not? Just know you're getting a quick glimpse and not "seeing Milan." Good luck on your trip!

We wanted to see the Last Supper but our day in Milan is a Monday, which I believe it is closed.

Perhaps the question is - should we stop in Milan for 3 hours or spend 3 extra hours in Venice?

If you could recommend 1 or 2 things to see please let us know.

Thanks!

Yes, LS is closed Mondays. Some would choose to spend the extra 3 hours in Venice since 3 hrs is not enough time to do justice to Milan. If you choose to spend the 3 hrs in Milan, do as many of these as you have time for:Duomo including roofDuomo Museum (separate but related)Galleria Vittorio EmanueleThose 3 are close together. If you still have time (doubtful), touring the La Scala Opera House isn't too far away from the other three.

There are also some great stores right around the Duomo. The idea of having to fit it all in in 3 hours stresses me out.
I had a night out last week in Milan. With the lights, the stores, the beautiful people--it was fantastic and it is yet another side of Italy that people don't often think about. Maybe go to Venice later?

Claire - glad to see SOMEONE ELSE likes Milano. I find it to be a fascinating city with the contrast of old and new, business and tradition - and NO, three hours does not do it justice...

yet, I think if you're going to do it... Kent's recommendations are great as those "sites" ARE all close together. Know that we spent 2 1/2 hours just on the roof of the Duomo one day though... it's easy to get fooled by Milan as it reveals itself like a shy child - and that's so surprising in such a business-related city - I guess that's why I like it!

Court,

I'm another one who loves Milan...rather than spending 3 hours in Milan (just enough time to get off the train...check you luggage....get a cab to the Duomo and speed through it...run through the Galeria..then grab a cab and return to the train station)...spend the time in Venice and vow to return to Italy to see some of the parts you missed this time..such as Milan, Lake Como (or Bergamo in deference to Claire), maybe even the Dolimites...a week in Switzerland before returning to Italy. In fairness, can you see yourself recommending to someone you care about, that they stop in Chicago for "just 3 hours"?
