Milan in 1/2 a day ( our last day)

Hi all, we are just putting the final touches on our trip in September. Our last days leaving the Dolomites on the 8th staying until the 10th in Lake Como. Our plane does not leave out of MXP until 9pm ( heading to Irelamd).our last day I was thinking of getting to Milan and seeing the Duomo and whatever we can pack into about 6hours. What do you think. Is it worth it? We would try and drop our car off at the airport and take bus or train to the city. Or ...can we find easy parking.( the word easy and parking do not look right on an Italian site :)
Love to hear views

We have been to Milan a couple of times. I think it is an underrated tourist city that doesn't make a lot of lists. It is a more modern Italy city since most of it was leveled in WW II. It is worth a day or two. I think the Duomo is the fourth largest cath in Europe. It was undergoing heavy renovation last Fall so I don't know the status of that. Your have the opera house, the Last Supper, etc. You can easily fill your time. The train would be your better option for getting back into the city.

I believe they are driving a car and planning to drop it at the airport.

I know that the drive from Lake Como is about an hour.My reservation is parking the darn car near where we want to be in Milan City. So that's where I was thinking it might be better to drop the car off at the airport early and taking the train ( But how much time does this all take ? Oh gosh...I just thought ..what to do with the luggage...ahhh..no...can I leave them at the airport?
I think I just burst my own bubble ???

Relatively speaking Lake Como and the airport are on the same side of Milano. I could not quickly find my good Italian road map but I would think that there would be a road between the two within going into Milan. If you drop the car at the airport, the train in is about 30 minutes to the old west side station nearer the Duomo than the Central train station. Pick a hotel in that area.

Just curious when did the front scaffolding come down?

We were just in Milan a couple of days ago. There is no scaffolding on th efront of the Duomo, but there may be some on the side. It was too hot to walk all the way around it, which was a great disappointment, as we particularly wanted to go up on the roof. But we enjoyed Milan and will go back.

Try to find out if you can check your bags at Malpensa early, as that would be the ideal solution. If not, you can check them at Milano Centrale for 4 euro each (according to Rick; we didn't need to do this). If you are doing that, it might make more sense to drop the car at Linate and take the shuttle to Milano Centrale to drop your bags.

Thanks Frank and everyone. I will look into dropping the car at the airport storing our bags and taking the train into the city. And yes, I forgot that MXP in on that side of Milan which is good for us. Hope the Duomo will be fully completed when we get there.
Thank you

We just got back yesterday from 15 days in Italy. Our last stop was Milan and we too spent just half a day there ... and only went there because we were flying out of Milan which means I didn't plan much and didn't do the research I wish I had. It's a great city! Unlike Rome, where the Metro is dirty, crowded, and full of pickpockets, Milan has a great subway system and everything is very accessible. There is a fairly inexpensive bus that runs from the airport (Malpensa, although maybe you're using the other one that is closer to the city in which case I'm not sure) to Milano Centrale train station and from there you can go anywhere on the Metro. I highly recommend the Cathedral (amazing, even if you've seen lots of others), just wandering around the area around the Cathedral a bit, and perhaps the Last Supper (which we didn't do ... look in to getting tickets in advance if this is something you want to do). There's lots of great shopping if you're interested and fabulous old streets and people-watching too. We didn't make it to the Castle but that looked really interesting as well. The bottom line is that yes, Milan is worth a couple hours and there's lots to see that's convenient and accessible.

If you have thoroughly seen Lake Como espec Varenna and do not mind being xtra busy bef you fly out then yes go. Duomo & surrounding piazza, La Scala, and shopping arcade are all together and easy to reach by metro.I do not rate it as special as lake Como but it is of course very diff. It would be better if you could drop car rental off near Milano centrale.
