Milan hotels

We will be arriving in Milan by plane. We will be staying in the City for just 1 night. We were thinking of staying near the train station so that w can drop our bags off and then be able to take the train to continue our trip the next day. Comments on this website suggest that the area around the train station is rough.
Can you suggest a hotel ( s ) near the station? or should we plan to stay somewhere else and just take a tram or taxi to and from the rail station? Thanks./Sid

Hotel star. Had a bath tub. Good breakfast. Cheesy but amusing animal murals on the wall. We stayed there for 1 night after we flew in from the states.

Hotel Berna is nearly across the street, very comfy, quiet, very good brekkie, reasonable (for me) prices; in peak season to get the very best rates may require 2 night stay.

Una Hotel Century. 5 minute walk from the station, decent price, nice room, big complimentary breakfast. We stayed there for 2 nights in April, 2012.

Another vote for Hotel Berna. We were just there in May for 2 nights before flying home and the hotel is great. Area around the train station isn't that bad (some bums sleeping near the McDonalds)...we had no problems walking around day or night, but it was certainly convenient being near the train station for arrival/departure. And once you enter the lobby of the hotel we forgot about the bums!

We may be missing something but don't think of the area around the station much different than places like Termini. But we have only walked straight out the front and across the plaza. Maybe behind the station is another issue.
