We(4 people) are ending a Rick Steves tour and then extending our time with a 3 day stay in Milan, flying out of the airport there on last day. We probably want to stay in central city, and would like some recommendations. I see Rick's tours never seem to stay in Milan so can't use that as a resource! Any hotel recommendations? Or any experiences with Airbnb in Milan?
Thank you,
Many years ago we stayed at the Hotel dei Cavalieri. Centrally located. Walking distance to Duomo, pedestrian mall, and Sforza. Very nice and comfortable.
Hotel Spadari al Duomo is excellent and is in Rick's Milan book (at least the 2014 edition), with Ciacco Gelato as its new neighbor.
I stayed at Hotel Berna, very near Milano Centrale. It was an easy metro ride to the Duomo and train ride to Malpensa (MXP). If you scroll down the page at the blue link, you'll see how close it is to the train and the metro, and also to a shuttle that goes to MXP.
They have a great breakfast.
and Hotel Garda - right across the street from the Hotel Berna. Just a couple short blocks from the main train station.
We are big fans of the Berna and have stayed there many times. Very convenient to the train station and a Metro stop is on the corner. It is a 20 to 30 minute walk to the Duomo. Their breakfast cannot be beat and the apericena at night in the bar can serve as supper as long as you buy a drink.
We were very pleased with Antica Locanda Leonardo near Milan Cadorna Station and Sta Maria Delle Grazia, where The Last Supper is located. The hotel is set back from the city street , includes a quiet garden filled space. Wonderful breakfast too.
We used to stay at the Berna and liked it very much, but now stay in airbnb apartments close to the OTHER train station, Milano Porta Garibaldi, which also has transport to Malpensa airport.
We stay close to Eataly, where we like to buy last-minute presents for people, and close to the big cemetery, which we like to walk around in. Nicer neighborhood than around the Milano Centrale station. Lots of good public transportation to other parts of Milan. Really fun to ride the old trams.
So far, there's been one great apartment that we return to when we can (but too small for four people) and one that was OK but what we call in our family "bersick" (what our son used to call Duplo Legos when he was a Lego-mad preschooler, i.e "too basic").
Another vote for Berna. Actually stayed in the annex across the street. It was fine. Handy to the Central train station and metro stop.
UNA Maison Milano. almost directly across from the Duomo. I've stayed there three times. Always happy.
Another vote for Hotel Berna. Our room was perfect and they have an amazing breakfast.
I have a reservation at Hotel Berna in Oct pre RS tour in Venice. Getting very excited and nice to read such good reviews since I’ve nerve stayed there. What took it over the top was I used air miles for the fee. I was unable to use Alaska miles for airfare due to the terrible flight schedules offered their loyal customers. They recently adding hotels stays to miles awards so nice to see Hotel Berna on their partner list.
Thank you one and all. We definitely have some choices now. Good to know!
