Milan hotel with 2 children

Hi - I am squeezing two days/three nights in Milan into my England/Switzerland/Paris trip because the flight from England to Milan was dirt cheap on Ryanair. Unfortunately, that seems to be the last cheap thing I'm going to find! :) My questions:

  1. When reserving a hotel room for two adults, one child (age 4) and one infant (12 months), does this count as a room for 4? I would think a triple room would suffice; the baby can't sleep in a bed. Do hotels offer portable cribs, or do I need to bring one?

  2. Is there a better way to spend my limited time in Italy? Here's the schedule:

Monday: fly into Milan, arrive 15:00 at Bergamo
Tuesday: Last Supper (hopefully), Duomo
Wednesday: open
Thursday: Eurocamp reservations at Lauterbrunen, Switz. (4 hr train from Milan to Laut.)

I was thinking about maybe a daytrip to Parma (love the cheese) on Wednesday. Or, I could head to Switzerland early and see something other than the Lauterbrunnen area (a good chocolate tour, maybe). Or make it quick in Milan and go somewhere else in Italy. Argh! Too many fantastic choices, not nearly enough time (or money). Opinions? What would you do with almost 3 days starting in Milan with two moderately well-behaved children?

Thanks!!

Two things:Have you planned for how you will get from Bergamo airport, about 40 miles east of Milan, into Milan? You will be using the Milan train station a lot and will want to select a hotel within convenient distance of the Centrale terminal.

I believe there is a bus that goes directly to Milan from Orio, otherwise you can take the bus to center of Bergamo and then train to Milan.
The hotel will most likely NOT have a crib, I would suggest bringing a pack-n-play,so you are guaranteed that the baby has somewhere to sleep but most hotels won't count the baby as a guest. Just say that the baby will be sleeping with you.
It sounds like you have too much packed into 3 days. I have children almost the same age and I wouldn't attempt to do so much in such a short time, so I would count out Parma. It is a couple hours by train, and good cheese can be found in abundance all over Italy, especially Parma Reggiano, which is what I assume you are referring to. Save it for another time.
May I also suggest using Bergamo as your base, and use a day there to sightsee? It's a bit slower than Milan, and there is a lot to see, and the Città Alta is beautiful and a great place to be with children.

CONTINUED:
There are no traffic zones, and lots piazzas and green spaces to run around in, and Bergamo is a straight shot to Milan by train, so it would be easy to get into Milan for a day of sightseeing or for your trip to Switerland.

Emily: Claire has great ideas. We're lucky to be getting advice from someone who lives where you're flying into, Bergamo.
