Hi. We will be departing out of Milan on an AA 10:30 am flt early August. We will be visiting relatives in Piedmont area(Mondovi) prior and will leave their home Monday probably early or mid day. We will probably have a rental car. Should we drive into Milan, park, walk around for the afternoon and then head out of town to an airport hotel so we have no rush the next morning?(If so can you recommend one?)
Or should we stay in Milan and drive to Malpensa Tuesday? Or should we return the car on Monday, stay in Milan for the afternoon and evening and take the train to Malpensa for our departure the next morning? Thanks! BTF

You have plenty of time to get to the airport in the morning from Milan. I think what I would recommend, depending on your luggage, is turn your rental car in at the airport on your way in from Piedmont and the train or bus in to Milan for an evening and stay there. There is absolutely nothing to do near the airport, although there are plenty of hotel close by.
