We are interested in a central hotel nicer 3-4 star ratings for a couple. We like charm. It does not have to a large chain hotel but proximity is important.

I've stayed near the central train station - ideal location to get the metro, trains, buses etc. I have walked to the Duomo from here.
Recommend The Berna and the Garda - they are across the street from each other, budget hotels, only a couple blocks from Central train station and Metro is on the corner.

We stayed at the Hotel Windsor Milan. It was about 3/4 of a mile from the train station and very close to the Metro. Their website is

There is a selection for English on the website.
If you do book a room there, ask for an interior room as the trams run late into the evening and an interior room would be quieter.

We are staying at the Hotel Spadari al Duomo in early April for 4 nights.

It is very centrally located (maybe a 1-2 minute walk from the Duomo) and gets really good reviews online. One added benefit is that its right next door to the gourmet food store, Peck.
