Carl, You might check your local Library and have a look at some Guidebooks (RS books or others) covering the areas you'll be visiting. They have lots of suggestions on good Hotels, restaurants, etc. As you're a "first timer", it would also be a good idea to read Europe Through The Back Door prior to your trip. That provides lots of good information on "how" to travel in Europe. Where are you planning to stay on Lake Como and Piedmont? The big favourite here on Lake Como is the small town of Varenna, which is in the mid-lake area, and about an hour by train from Milan. Piedmont is a somewhat large area, so it's difficult to provide suggestions on "where to stay and eat"? Will you be pre-booking Hotels? When will this trip be taking place? Cheers!

In 2008 we stayed at a winery called Cantina Rizzi near Treiso in the Piemonte. We liked it so much we are going back this summer. The winery has two apartments that can be rented. Treiso is very small, 750 residents, but had three really good restaurants. It is near Alba and we hope to visit Alba, Turin, and Barolo while we are there.

Thank you all, We are leaving 7/9 and coming back on 7/23. First we go to Milano. My wife wants to buy a truck load of shoes so that will at least be 2 days. Then I was thinking 2 day at Lago Como. The rest in the winecountry. I don`t care if we stay in a hotel or a B&B or what ever.
That little winery sounds more my style....My favorite wine is Barolo. Great advice to go to the library
