We are on older couple having Christmas in Italy. We are flying in to Milan, staying a couple of days, train to Florence for 9 days and train back to Milan for a couple of days. Now I think we should stop in another place for a few days rather than have 9 days in Florence where we have been before. Any suggestions for that place would be welcome. It needs to be either on a train or bus line between Milan and Florence, and perhaps a contrast to the big cities. I know the weather is against us but we are prepared for that. I hope someone may have an idea for us. Thanks in advance.
Venice is magical anytime but especially so in the winter.
Thank you so much for replying - I agree Venice is fantastic - having spent 2 weeks in an apartment there not so long ago, I would like to think of somewhere else kind of between Milan and Florence or thereabouts.
Thanks for responding though.
Bergamo comes to mind. closer to Milan http://travel.nytimes.com/2010/12/19/travel/19bergamo-overnighter.html?pagewanted=all Bologna is another obvious spot, if you haven't been. Larger city though.
Spent Christmas-NewYears 2010 in Italy. I would suggest Bologna. San Gimignano, Parma, Volterra.
The weather last year was not too bad. Sunny a few days, but COLD. Enjoy your trip. For me, it was magical to be in Italy during some a special holiday.
Make sure to make a reservation as much ahead of time for dinner on Christmas Day. Your hotel that you'll be at then can probably recommend/book a place.
