Milan Duomo tickets in advance?

I would appreciate advice about visiting Milan’s Duomo early in the day. The website provides ticket prices and says you have to use them within three days of purchase. It is very hot here now, and I hope to get in and take a lift to the rooftop right when it opens. RS shows ticket machines on his map page. Or, we could order online and print here at our hotel in Torino.

For Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, we got our tickets for a tour well in advance to ensure we could get in early on the date we needed. For Milan’s Duomo, we will be happy to explore on our own and take the lift up to the rooftop. Does it make sense to get the tickets before arrival? We will only be in Milan for 24 hours. I don’t have a sense of how busy it might be at 8 or 9 AM on a Thursday in July.

Finally, are we making a mistake by not booking a tour? We’ve been fortunate to see some of the great churches in Europe over the years...with such a short stay in Milan we thought we’d appreciate the flexibility of a DIY plan.

Thanks for any help you can share,
Laurie

I bought tickets online before we went and it was nice to be able to just go to the security line. You will go to one line for the duomo interior and another line for the lift up to the rooftop.

Last year in October, I bought the Fast Track ticket the morning of my visit. It cost a little more, but it was worth it to me. It didn't take me long to get the ticket. Most folks were in a longer line to get into just the Duomo. Fast Track ticket includes the roof/terrace with the lift, the interior of the cathedral and the nearby museum. You go to the rooftop first and then exit into the cathedral.
Since you're only in Milan for a day, it might be worth it to buy in advance.
