Help! Arrive in Milan MXP airport at 1:30 pm….after customs and transport to our rental which is right by a metro stop…15 minutes to Duomo….would we have time to go to Duomo that day or should we go the next morning before taking train to Levanto?
I am a chronic planner and don’t know if we should play by ear or buy tickets online in advance.
The online site says latest ticket time is 4:30 on day of arrival (5/27)
Did you want to go up on the rooftop or did you just want to visit the inside of the Duomo?
I would definitely plan for the morning after arrival and get tickets in advance. Delays are always possible with flight arrival times and getting through passport control.
Ultimately, it depends on factors you can't know until that day, like whether you get
to your lodging early, late or on time, and how well you've survived the (I assume)
overnight journey.
Also, are you thinking/hoping to do things like take the rooftop tour? That will take
more time.
Overall, it seems tight to me. You could hit delays at MXP due to the ongoing EES
snafus. An hour to get into Milan at least. Get to your lodging and resist the desire
to take a nap. But, at the least, I'd bookmark the ticketing site and keep track of
ticket availability, so you can buy tickets quickly if the scheduling works out.
Tickets for the Duomo, per the website, are good for 2 days. As I remember, this is a little confusing because you do have to reserve for a specific time. But if you can figure out exactly how the 2 day window works, you might be able to buy tickets in advance for your arrival day and see some or all of the Duomo sites that day, or not, or save some for the next morning. For me, the rooftop terrace was the most memorable part; personally, I would not choose to climb the stairs (even with the elevator option there is some climbing) and walk around the roof when I was sleep-deprived and jet lagged.
As a general practice we do not reserve any activities for the arrival day. The main issue is that you have several procedures that you need to go through from taking off in the US to your B&B that you simply cannot control. Delay at any one point and your whole schedule is off and the stress level grows. It is just not worth it. How you deal with jet-lag is also critical. Jet-lag is real.
I have not been in Milan for several years but in prior years a lot of restaurants do not open until 8 or 9 PM. So you need to plan accordingly. You might have time for a quick nap in prep for your evening. Good luck.
If we go the next morning before taking train to Levanto, are there places near the Duomo to store luggage?
Re luggage storage, Google it. Plenty of hits, probably lots of options.
If you're on the 12:10pm train, don't forget that getting from Duomo to Milano
Centrale may take a bit of time, between retrieving your bags (there always
seems to be a line at places like that when you're in a hurry), and getting to
the station. You probably have a couple of hours if you're there at 9am sharp.
