I will have a car during my trip in Italy. Pick up and return will be Malpensa airport. I will be returning from Lake Garda and would like to spend my last day/night in Milan having a morning flight out from Malpensa airport where I also need to return the rental car. My question is, what area should I stay our last night knowing we will have to drive to the airport for our return flight and auto return the following morning? Plan to arrive in Milan late morning/early afternoon driving from Lake Garda. Your feedback and suggestions are welcomed!

I like to stay in Stresa, on lake Maggiore. It's only 45 min to the airport mostly on a freeway and you don't have to deal with Milan's traffic. I know you are coming from another lake, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to spend a couple of nights on Lake Maggiore as well. That way you get to see at least the Borromee islands, a short boat ride from Stresa. Arona, on the same lake is another option about 10 min closer to the airport (although I've never stayed there).

I would also consider dropping the car in Milan and taking the train to the airport in the morning. There is little advantage to keeping the car in Milan. Since you have time on your side I would drop it the day before and then you are not going to deal with Milan traffic. The airport is about an hour from Milan's train station.

Also a good suggestion to consider. Wasn't thinking of not returning to airport but that might be a better option. thanks you!
