Milan day trip recommendations

6After touring Tuscany (Florence and Siena) for 6 days in early April 2026, we are headed to Milan by train for 3 days. We have a guided walking tour in Milan on day 1 and going to Lake Como area on day 2. Looking for suggestions for our 3rd day. Willing to take a train to nearby cities/venues for the day. Would appreciate suggestions for this day trip. Thank you.

Visit Lecco on Lake Como. Then, two great cities worthy of daytrips are Torino ( Turin) and Brescia— both just an hour by train from Milano.

Spend time in Milan on day three. Visit the city archaeology museum and the connected church. Stop for lunch at Desantis for an incredible sandwich. Visit the baptistery in the Duomo where St Augustine was baptized.

If you're still interested in seeing lakes after Lago di Como, you can easily visit Lago Maggiore by taking the train to Stresa. From there you can get ferries to the Borromean islands in the middle of the lake which are very nice. You can also get a train to Desenzano del Garda and visit Lago di Garda, including a ferry to Sirmione.

Turin is amazing. Its called the "Paris of Italy". After visiting Turin, we started calling Paris the "Turin of France".

The Shroud of Turin is, of course, famous and worth the visit for our perspective (Catholic pilgrims). Sacra di San Michele is an amazing ancient monastery, used as a model for the book/film Name of the Rose. The Basilica di Superga sits on the hills above Turin and has a fantastic view of the whole city.

We loved the Bicerin, a decadent blend of hot chocolate, espresso, and heavy cream, which we enjoyed after the Lavazza tour.

Do you have plans for a guided tour of the Milan Duomo and the rooftop? If not, I would highly recommend doing that, either on Day one if you have the time, or stay in Milan on Day 3 to see the Duomo. It is stunning!

I read about the Vinitaly - Verona Wine Festival - Perhaps April 7-9. Does anyone know about this? Is it worth our time to travel there on April 9?

We enjoyed a day trip (by train) from Milan to Pavia and Certosa di Pavia.
