Milan day trip

Looking for ideas for a day trip somewhere from Milan....traveling with teenage male and looking for something interesting that isn't related to art or churches.

You could take a day trip by train to Lake Como or Varenna. Once there you could take a lake cruise, depending on the time of year you are traveling.

You could take the train to Tirano, transfer to the Bernina Express up the GORGEOUS Bernina Pass to St. Moritz, then return through Chiavenna and the equally beautiful Maloja Pass. You may need to take a bus at some point, but it would be an easy connection. It would be a long day, but the scenery is really fantastic. You could stop in St. Moritz for lunch, browse around, and then return. St. Moritz is the ritziest place on the planet. A travel agent could help you or someone at the hotel in Milano could make the reservations.

As I mentioned, this would be a long train ride, but very beautiful.

I think taking the train to Varenna would be a great day trip from Milan. It takes a little over an hour to get there by train. In addition to taking a ferry to the various towns around the lake, you can hike to the castle above Varenna. Just remember to buy a round trip ticket in Milan and validate your tickets before getting on the train.
