Milan Centrale Station to Cimitero Monumentale

I'm passing through Milan on the train in May and would like to stop for a visit to the Monumental Cemetery for a few hours. I'm a bit confused about how to get there from the train station and back. Someone told me to take the green Metro line to the Porta Giribaldi station (2 stops) and the cemetery will be right outside the P.ta Giribaldi station. I've seen a lot of conflicting info, so if anyone could offer some guidance, it would be much appreciated! Grazie!

We were in Milan for 2 weeks this past summer and used both train stations, the metro, and buses a lot. The information that you describe is accurate but distances can be daunting and there is a HUGE construction zone going on between Centrale and the Cemetary runnning right past the front of Giribaldi. I think the overall distance is about 2km. If you use Google maps maps.google.com and search for directions between Central and the Cemetary it will show you 3 routes: walking, metro and driving/taxi. It will give you times and distances. If time is limited, I'd consider taking a taxi at least to get there. You could walk back to Giribaldi to catch the metro back to central when you are finished at the cemetary.
