I have stayed at the Hotel Berna and the Garda - both are about 2 blocks from the central station and are across the street from each other. Berna is a bit more expensive than the Garda - but both are perfect for your needs.
You can fine them on Venere.com and tripadvisor.com etc.

thank you so much -- is it possible to walk to the Duomo (sp?) -- we will have one afternoon to walk around and then off to Siena the next day. thanks so much. btw -- we are landing in MXP - and then to Siena .... so that is why we would like to be near the central train station, but yet be able to walk around the Duomo (sp?) area and then back to the hotel. thanks again. dianne

It's about a couple of miles from the station to the Duomo. If that's too long, you have plenty of transit option, including the Metro, which will zip underground from the station to the Duomo in just the time to sit down and stand right back up again.

If you have time and want a bit of a stroll in addition to your walk, go to the Castello Sforzesco - nice grounds, very relaxing after a long plane ride.

There is a Metro station right on the corner of the street with Hotel Berna and Garda hotels. Very quick Metro ride to just about anywhere in Milan. But, you can walk too......if you are short on time, I would use the Metro and have more time to see the Duomo, go up on the roof of the Duomo, La Scala Opera house is about 2 blocks from Duomo and has a great museum.
Enjoy

I second the Berna. I still use the little shampoo bottle from there and refill it with my own. Their brekkie is a really nice spread. Agree about the walking distances too. It is a bit of a hike from the M.CLE to Duomo.

Stayed at Hotel Berna 1 night in July 2009 as we were flying out of Milan. Great hotel and easy walk from train station. Hop on the metro to get to the Duomo. Very easy to do. I will second the great breakfast here!!
