Check with autoeurope.com or europecar.com for pricing. They are brokers who use the major renters, only at lower prices. Make sure you have an international driver's permit available from AAA. They are not necessary for the rental, but are necessary if you are stopped or have an accident. You could also check with tripadvisor.com for lower priced rental cars. Make sure your rental includes CDW inclusive. Most credit cards' insurance coverage does not extend to Italy, Ireland, Portugal, or Israel. Your car insurance won't apply either. Buon viaggio,

try kayak.com; that got me to the best rates at hertz. We're renting a car after our 5 day stay in Florence. After some research, I decided to rent in Lucca (our first stop) instead of dealing with traffic and ZTL in Florence. Train transport is very good in Italy, so it was easier and probably cheaper to get to Lucca by rail (it helped that the train station is close to our hotel)

Also try Autoeurope.eu. You should be able to get a car there fully loaded with insurance, for less than most others. Go to their web site and play with the pick-up location....it usually costs more to pick up at a rail station or airport. Sometimes you can save big $$$ wirth a cheap cab ride into town.

Thanks for the advice. Interestingly, autoeurope.com gives different car choices and higher prices than autoeurope.co.uk... i won't try to understand why.
autoeurope.co.uk also has a "Inclusive Fully refundable excess, including tyres and windscreen" on the car I am booking; although, I don't see mention of it on the terms and conditions that I must agree to when booking.
