milan car rental

we are flying into Milan on Sept 2. we will be there 2 days and then go to a small town called Poggibonsi near Florence. While in Milan we won't be using a car however we will need one to get to Poggibonsi. Therefore, a few questions, please.
Is it easy to get from Milan airport to Milan central by train?
Can we rent a car at Milan Centrale train station when we are ready to go to Poggibonsi?
Would it make more sense to go by train from Milan to Florence and rent the car there to continue to Poggibonsi?

Thank you

It's very simple to get train from Milan Malpensa to Milan Centrale. Trains leave every 30 minutes, take 45 minutes. You buy tickets at a kiosk or the ticket window. Be sure to validate before you go done the escalator to your track. No need to purchase in advance.

Might be a good idea to get a metro 2 day pass, depending on where you are staying. I haven't rented a car in Milan, but traffic here doesn't seem as crazy as other Italy Cities. Just be sure to have an exit route that takes you directly out of the city. I'm sure there is a car rental near Milan Centrale. Alterntively you can take the train back to Malpensa, and rent car there.

I would be tempted to take the train from Milan to Florence and then rent your car in Florence. Also, it depends what you plan to do after Poggibonsi.

We took a taxi to Linate airport to pick up our rental car when leaving Milan. Linate wasn’t far from the city center. After several weeks, we returned it to Malpensa and flew home.

I would take the train to Florence and rent the car in Florence.
When I fly to Milan I often rent the car there and drive to Florence (my hometown). But each time I hate myself for making that choice. That drive is the most boring drive that was ever designed. The freeway is so straight and flat that I hardly stay awake.
If there are multiple people in your party the car will be slightly cheaper than the high speed train, but saving yourself from that drive is worth the extra few euro. Take the train. You’ll be in Florence in just over 1h40m instead of 4 hours on the freeway.
