Need advice. This 56 year old is traveling with her 23 year old daughter and her boyfriend in early December. We arrive in Milan, from Switzerland, on a Saturday evening and will be flying to Dublin the following Monday night--21:00 flight. So would love advice on how to spend our time in Italy, besides eating lots of gelato. I'm getting a lot of people asking why we're going to Milan, and suggesting Lake Como is better--but in December?. By the time we hit Italy, we may want to keep things low key and relaxed. I get the impression that Lake Como is somewhat desserted this time of year, so wondering if it would be worth the trip there and back. Bergamo sounds intriguing. Was thinking of spending Sunday in Bergamo. returning to Milan that night, and then touring Milan all day on Monday. But if you think Lake Como is worth doing, would love suggestions on how to divide our time.
Many places and hotels on Lake Como are closed in December.
We have one day, a Sunday, in Milan as well. I searched "one day in Milan" and found several good itineraries that I feel will make for a great day in the city without being overwhelming. If you are interested in seeing The Last Supper, buy tickets now or before you leave.
Milano is a great city with lots of indoor things to see if the weather is bad. If the weather is good, you can take an elevator or stairs to the roof of the Duomo, there are some great museums as well.
Bergamo is one of my favorite places, I was there on a Sunday and had a great day (crafts market was open). You might want to make that your winding-down stop instead of the Lake - Bergamo is about an hour from Milano, take the bus from the train station to Citta Alta (buy bus ticket at the tabacchi near the bus stop.
Thanks so much for the input. I was slowly coming to the conclusion that Lake Como was not the best idea. We will focus our time in Milan and Bergamo.
