Advice needed please re a day trip from Milan to Como or Maggiore. Do we go it alone or take a tour?

Each of the lakes has lots of interesting towns. You can drive or take ferries. Tour is not necessary.

It's an easy train ride from Milan to the lakes region maybe an hour or so. Rick's book has some great suggestions (even where to disembark from the train). We crossed the lake via ferry and spent time there. One of our most enjoyable memories was taking the local bus back down to Como. It was a beautiful trip along the coast. Then we took the train back to Milan.
