We will be flying out of Milan Malpensa on a 6 a.m. flight and I'm trying to figure out if we should: a) stay at a hotel close to the Central train station? But is the area a bit sketchy? And would we have to take a bus to Malpensa or does the train go there? b) stay at a hotel close to the Cardona train station - where it appears the train is direct to Malpensa?
c) stay at a hotel that's close to the airport? Do they have taxis that could take us before any hotel shuttle might start? I should also mention we'll be spending 2 nights here so that we can spend some time doing the sites in Milan the day before we fly out. We're OK with some transit time to get to the sites in Milan if it means a shorter commute to the airport the next day. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
There are several hotels very near the main train station and there are shuttle buses to the MXP airport that seem to run pretty much round the clock. I have used the shuttle several times and found it very easy. The hotels near the main train station are all within a short walk to at least 1 metro station.
I've stayed at the Hotel Berna (my favorite) and Hotel Garda - both are about 2 blocks from the train station. One note: I have found that these hotels fill up quickly and you will need to book in pretty far in advance. You don't mention when you are going, but keep in mind that good hotels and deal go very quickly.
There is a sheraton hotel right at the airport - you just walk under the main road using the underground passageway. It takes less than 5 minutes. It's the Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport. I got to the airport the night before my flight using the bus from the central train station. I stayed there last summer because I had a similarly early flight. It's a pretty nice hotel, with plenty of soundproofing. Dinner there is quite pricey. I found the airport to be very busy early in the morning. Leave plenty of time to check in and get through security.
We stayed at the Best Western Major hotel for our visit in Milan. Very close to the metro station, very comfortable reasonably priced rooms and a great buffet breakfast. With a 6 a.m. flight, I would leave the night before and consider staying at the Best Western Jet Hotel. We took the train from the metro and then took a 20 minute walk to the hotel. They also have great rooms with a wonderful breakfast. I believe they also have a free shuttle to the airport.
I stayed at Hotel Garda a couple of months ago and loved it. They also offered a discount for paying in cash. It's a couple of blocks from the train station, the area not sketchy, and it's close to all transportation.
Great information - thank you all - this has been very helpful!
