Milan and lakes in September

Sorry, first question was confusing. I want to go to Como (Varenna) and Garda, and Milan and am trying to figure out the best route. From Malpensa, can I get to Varenna directly without first goint to Milan? How? Then from Varenna should I go back to Milan for a couple of days and then to Garda. My ultimate destination is Florence, so must I go back to Milan again to get train to Florence?

Mercedes, There are a couple of ways you could get to Varenna, but the easiest is to take the train or Malpensa Shuttle to Milano Centrale, and then train to Varenna. The trip from Milan is 1H:03M, and as I recall the trains to Varenna run every two hours. If you haven't been to Milano Centrale previously, it often seems a bit "chaotic" so be prepared (be sure to wear a Money Belt). A few tips on arrival in Varenna. The train will pass through a tunnel just before arriving in Varenna. Be sure you know how to release the door (sometimes a lever, sometimes a pushbutton) and disembark quickly! The train only stops for a minute or so. Be careful walking over the other set of tracks! Depending on where you're staying, you should be able to walk to your Hotel. To reach Lake Garda you'll have to follow the same route back to Milan and connect there. Whether you "should" go back to Milan for a couple of days will depend on what you might like to see there (ie: The Last Supper, Duomo, etc.). You won't have to return to Milan to travel from Lake Garda to Florence. The usual route is a train from Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione to Florence (time as short as 2H:53M, often one change in Padova, current second class fare listed at €55, reservations compulsory which will be included with P-P tickets). Travel time on that route will vary according to which train you choose. Happy travels!
