I have one or two days in Milan, and hope to get tickets in advance with a tour to see the Last Supper. If that is successful, we would like to see the Duomo, Galleria, and a few other sites. If the train ride to Como is only an hour each way, is it worth it to take one of my two days to go north and basically kick back, maybe ride around on the lake, hang out?
Well, it depends. If you have two full days in Milan and everything well planned, it is worth trying to make a trip to Como. But with one day in Milan, it doesn't make much sense.
I agree somewhat with the previous reply. However, if you really want to visit Lake Como with the objective of relaxing, consider taking the train to Varenna and hanging out there for a nice lunch, then taking the short ferry ride (15 min) to Bellagio and wander around there.
Yes. You can see those sights in Milan in less than a full day. If you do go to Lake Como, the prettiest part is in the middle of the lake, farther north of the town of Como. Varenna and Bellagio. You can take the ferry to both.
I have done exactly that in Como. Note that ferries are s-l-o-w.
Having just visited Milan, I wish we had gone to Como instead. Milan felt about as Italian as a taco. The Duomo is exceptional, and I'm glad to have seen the Last Supper but other than that its pretty much like most American cities.
After a few days in Milan we took the train to Varenna and were so glad that we did. Gorgeous scenery, we stayed on the lake and were able to relax for a bit. Highly recommend! Italy was having a heat wave during our visit, so the lake provided welcome relief from the sweltering temperatures in the city. In my opinion, The Last Supper is an experience that should not be missed, so book your tickets as soon as your dates are set. Honestly, the rest of Milan was fine, but not particularly memorable. In all fairness though, portions of the Duomo were under renovation while we were there, so our visit to it was rather limited.
