Milan Airport to Venice

We are going to Italy at the end of April. We will be flying from Chicago to Milan. We land at 1:30pm. We will take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale and on to Venecia Santa Lucia via Trentalia.

Do you think it is reasonable that we could take a 4:45pm train to Venice at Milano Centrale?

Thank you!

I did exactly that a few years ago before apps, buying the tickets out of a ticket machine.

As others have already suggested, I'd also recommend waiting until you get to Milano Centrale to buy your train tickets. There are plenty of trains to Venice after 4:45pm, so you'll have no trouble catching one.

The final leg of the journey is something special ... when the train approaches Venice on that seemingly endless railway bridge across the lagoon, it feels almost magical. Leaving behind the familiar world of fields, trees, houses and streets and 'floating' across the lagoon.

Endorsing the recommendation to buy tickets when you arrive. Too many variables.

Under the best circumstances, if you don't check bags, and there are no hassles with
the EES data gathering machines/lines, and you don't get lost, you would most likely
make the 4:45 train. But, things like:

  • flight delays
  • time getting off the plane
  • immigration even in normal situations
  • timing of trains (even if they are every ~15 minutes, if you just miss one, that time could be important)
  • making your way without getting lost

all have a way of messing up your schedule when you least want them to.

If you buy well in advance you can save maybe 25 euro per person (the full cost is 49€ pp from Milano Centrale). However if the flight is late you risk losing it all. So it depends on your risk appetite.
