We are going to Italy at the end of April. We will be flying from Chicago to Milan. We land at 1:30pm. We will take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale and on to Venecia Santa Lucia via Trentalia.
Do you think it is reasonable that we could take a 4:45pm train to Venice at Milano Centrale?

It is probably reasonable but you can just wait and purchase train tix on arrival
It is always unpredictable
This current thread has train ticket info (refers to arrival at FCO but same advice really for arrival in Milan)
Purchase on the Trenitalia app on arrival to MXP
I did exactly that a few years ago before apps, buying the tickets out of a ticket machine.
