Milan airport to Lake Como

What is the best way to get there? If I recall, going to Milan first is a pain in the neck and takes an hour by bus. Is there a better way to get a train to Como directly from nearby Malpensa? This does not seem to be covered in Rick's book.

There is no direct train service from Malpensa to Como. According to the Malpensa site, there are three buses/day (no service on Sunday) directly from the airport to Como. Here is what I found on the site:

Departure from: Terminal 1-Exit 4-Stop 13

Timetable: 08.30 a.m. - 01.00 p.m. - 07.30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday

Duration Time: 1 h

Price: Malpensa-Como € 13.00

Thanks Tim. I think another poster and I have found a way to take the train toward Milan, but get off at Saronna and catch another to Como. I'm checking that out now.

For anyone going there... We have been before, and don't want to take a bus because the train/ferry combo is just so cool! Part of the whole arrival experience for us. The view from the train as you arrive at the Como station is awesome, and then the ferry ride is an event in itself.

Would you PLEASE share with me the train route you find from Malpensa airport to Como? I am returning from Como to Malpensa Airport in August and I have not found a way to do that yet, other than via the bus. I do NOT want to go through the Milan Central station. Thank You!!!!!

I'm thrilled to have found your question here for it will answer mine. Thank You!!!!!!

Ok, so far I know that coming in to Malpensa airport we will take the Malpensa Express toward Milan station, but will get off at Saronno. Then from there we catch a Como train. I think you can do just the opposite. Here is a web site.

We return memorial day weekend, so I'll try to post and let you know how that goes.

Andrea,
We ran out of room on our little private chat. here's my response to your last entry.

the boat leaves hourly for the mid lake region. You may have to hop off at Bellagio or Menaggio and then take another across the lake. they are frequent

We are flying into Malpensa on 17 May and going to Varenna, so you have answered my question of the best way to get to Como. From Como is there a ferry to Varenna, or will we need to get off somewhere else and then board another one to get to Varenna? Thanks so much for your help!

Malpensa to Milano Centrale.
Change train to Varenna - Esimo.
Fairly easy

Just got back. The Malpensa Express to Saronno to Como has its pluses and minuses. Pluses: very easy to find the ticket booth and the train. Minuses: In Saronno you may wait an hour for the Como train, and it is not a very nice train (hot, smelly). However, it drops you at the small station in Como, which is a VERY easy walk to the ferry dock with luggage (not as easy from the main station). Depending on where on the lake you are going, you may want to go into Milan and then to Varenna. We've decided to stay in Varenna next time, so will do that.
