Milan Airport to Domodossola via Stresa

Hi,

We'll be arriving at MXP on 14 June 2024, and hope to make our way up to Montreux, with a night in Stresa on the way. It looks like they'll be working on the train tracks and the train will be shut down between the airport and Stresa. I see that there is a bus, but it appears to run only every few hours - 14:00, 16:00, 19:,00 and 21:30. I'm hoping that the bus will run more often during the time that the train is shut down since after a long flight from the US, we don't want to spend hours waiting for the bus. And it's not even clear that the train is running from Stresa to Domodossola during the time that it is shut down south of there.

Can someone help me out with understanding the train and bus schedules to get from MXP to Stresa, then Domodossola on to Montreaux? Thank you!

Joan

I doubt any extra buses will be added. I am sure there will be train replacement buses to cover the gap between Arona and Stresa, they just won't show up on schedules until June, just before they are needed.

Right now the train schedules show regular service between Milan and Domodossola up to June 8, then starting June 9 there are no trains running along that route, even outside the closed section between Arona and Stresa.

That should change with the new schedule, with replacement buses added; but if not, then getting to Stresa with the SAF bus will not help get you to Brig. Since you want to overnight somewhere on a lake before heading to Montreux, why not go from Malpensa to Milano Centrale and then to Lugano for your overnight? Then the next day continue into Switzerland on the Gotthard Pass route to Luzern. You can pick up the Golden Pass train to Montreux at Luzern, but you would probably want another overnight somewhere to break up the long journey.

Good choice. There are several nice lakefront hotels just a block or two from the train station.

There is a direct Tilo train from Malpensa Terminal 1 to Lugano every hour at 19 past the hour. At Lugano, you can change to a train to Locarno. That shortcuts going all the way into Milano Centrale.

Thank you! We're now planning to catch a train to Locarno and spend the night there before proceeding on to Montreux.
