Milan Airport Malpensa to Milan Train Station

Is there a train from the Milan Airport in Malpensa to the Milan train station downtown or should we take the shuttle bus that I've heard about?

Tom and Jane, There is indeed a train from MXP to Milano Centrale. Check This Website for the details. The train departs from Terminal 1. You could also take the Malpensa Shuttle. The cost is very reasonable (about €7.50 as I recall) and the trip is about 50 minutes (depending on traffic). The Shuttle departs from both Terminals, but if your flight is arriving at Terminal 2, the Shuttle is a better option. Check This Website for the details. I was there about three weeks ago, and took the Shuttle as my flight arrived at T2. If you're arriving on a flight from within Europe, you may be able to buy a ticket for the Shuttle onboard the aircraft (that was the case with my flight). When you present this to the Driver, he'll exchange it for a "proper" ticket. Happy travels!

There are 2 options for the train. One train (Malpensa Express) goes from the airport to Milan Cadorna. Trenitalia has a train that goes from the airport to Milan Centrale station. I think the trains leave from the same platform. We were going to Centrale to connect to a train for the Cinque Terre. Most connections to other parts of Italy are at the Centrale station. The train worked well for us. We didn't try the shuttle bus.

Now that they have trains from the airport to Milano Centrale, the case for the shuttle bus disappears, in my opinion. If you are arriving in Terminal 2 (only low-cost airlines), there is a free internal shuttle service connecting both terminals (1 and 2), a remote parking lot and the cargo area.

Not really. The train runs every 30 minutes and takes 30 mins or a little more. If you missed the train and the bus ready to roll, take bus.

Andre L., "Now that they have trains from the airport to Milano Centrale, the case for the shuttle bus disappears, in my opinion." After travelling that route a few weeks ago, I don't agree. If arriving at Terminal 2, IMO it's a waste of time to travel to Terminal 1 just to use the train, and will probably take longer than using the Shuttle. The Shuttles travel frequently from T2 to Milano Centrale, so when all factors are considered I believe that's the faster option. One other thing to consider is that if using the train, travellers will have to take the time to buy a ticket whether using the Kiosks or staffed ticket windows. At least with some airlines, the Shuttle tickets can be purchased during flight so that all that's necessary is walk out the front doors of the terminal and board the Shuttle. That was the case on my EasyJet flight from Prague to Milan. The Shuttle was packed so lots of people still seem to be using them. Cheers!
