Milan afternoon idea with travel naive parents

Landing in Milan Sat Oct 3 - leaving the next day via train for Switzerland
We are staying at Milan Hotel Glam which is close to Milan Central station so hopefully simplified for arrival (MXP) and departure (Milano Central Station).
I have spent hours trying to find Last Supper tix for October 3 pm - no luck -and to clarify I checked the website almost daily and still missed booking for tix. they do not tell you what day they will open blocks of tix.

What would you do with someone in their mid-70's -one who has only done golf tours to the British Isles and one who has never left North America. One likes history - one who is not very into history, art, or more urban settings -eek.
They are in good shape and can walk well but will certainly be tired after a red eye flight.

Should we book a tour? Recs?
Planning on earlier dinner so will not have a lot of time.

Thanks in advance!

Edit for details -
Parents have not voiced opinions when asked - i have discussed a couple of specific ideas as I have been to Milan.
I stated specifically naive as that is a different question than traveling with parents who do travel.

I wouldn’t book anything.
On a first trip to Italy, even little things are a novelty and fascinating!
On our first trip there we were fascinated to hear people saying “Ciao, ciao”.
We spent the whole trip trying to hear people say it three times: a Triple Ciao!

Perhaps a shower and a sit-down for no more than an hour, then go outside.
Walk slowly round the neighborhood, stop for a drink or ice-cream at an outdoor cafe/bar, then have an early dinner and an early night.
Have you asked the two parents what they want to do?

What time does your flight arrive? Which Milan airport? It could take an hour to get to your hotel from the airport depending on which one and time of day. You may want to pay for the night prior at the hotel (and tell them) so you can check in early, get cleaned up, and spend some time moving around in the afternoon. I did just that and took the metro to the duomo, took a spin around the inside and then climbed to the rooftop for the close up view of the spires. Then I had an early dinner and bedtime and was ready to go the next morning.

You may have missed the window to get last supper tickets for a Saturday, but according to the official website they release additional tickets every Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Italian time for the upcoming week. So keep checking back on the official site.

No question in my mind: the Duomo! It’s magnificent. They offer private tours as well as group tours in English. You can find out more info on the Duomo’s official site. www.duomomilano.it.

Walk…. Go see the Duomo, it’s beautiful. Walk around the Galleria. Go see the opera house. I hate to mention Starbucks but it really is neat one to see.

I would change the title of your post. Couldn’t it just read “Milan travel idea with parents.”

The only choice IMHO is the Cathedral and roof tour -- this is the most amazing sight in Milan and IMHO a more memorable experience than the greatly degraded Last Super . And then stroll around this area --

We flew into Milan airport and later in afternoon took a train to Lake Como.

We visited the duomo and wandered around the area. So I agree with those who suggest that. There were 7 of us and that worked for everyone.

Some of us took a taxi back to the train station so taxis are certainly an option too if walking becomes too much.

My first thought was the Last Supper (Cenacolo in Italian).
Second thought, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, on the north side of the square in front of the Cathedral (Duomo). It was novel 160 years ago when a glass roof was put above a street that had 4-story buildings, turning that outdoor street into an inside shopping “mall.” The tiled floor with zodiac signs includes Taurus the bull, and it’s traditional to spin a foot on his testicles for luck - won’t find that at many golf courses, or places in the U.S.!

Milan also has remnants from its canal system, worth seeking out. It’s not Venice, but I found the canals to be a surprise.

With just a few hours, I would go to the Duomo but skip the roof and inside, then go to Galleria which is next to it and then a few hours in the Navigli canal area. Or you could go to Navigli area first and then Duomo and Galleria.

I agree with Carol now retired.

Keep checking daily for Last Supper tickets. There could be a group that cancels, opening up tickets.

I wouldn't book any tour involving a bus. After a transatlantic flight, a bus ride would put many people to sleep.

The Duomo, the Galleria and an early dinner.

Absolutely agree that the Duomo and Galleria are a great choice. You can visit both in two hours - or less.

If you still have some wanderlust, a five minute walk away is the Bilblioteca/Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. A much quieter space with art, books, drawings and paintings from Milan’s glorious 16th C. past, along with Renaissance masterpieces. Another two hours there will round out an afternoon with far less in the way of crowds and without the advance commitment that The Last Supper will require.

I would skip the roof but do go inside- it is quite impressive and a nice quiet cool spot to sit for a bit.

Before investing more time and effort in trying for Last Supper tickets, perhaps find out if it interests them. I agree with other suggestions to focus on the Duomo and nearby Galleries Vittoria Emanuel. As long as your parents are reasonably mobile, the Duomo rooftop (some stairs even with the elevator option) is substantially different from most cathedral visits, and you get to tour the Cathedral inside as well. There is a free Rick Steves audio tour you can download that covers the Duomo and surrounding neighborhood including Galleries vittoria Emanual, La Scala opera house and some other sights all close by. An excellent art museum, the Pinocoteca Ambrosiana, in a few blocs from the Duomo though it sounds like an art museum may not be a preference.

Son & I just enjoyed 29 June--2 July '26 in Milano. We trained from Como to Milano.

A night stay won't allow time to see much. I suggest, as others have, see the Duomo if it's open, walk thru the Galleria, enjoy the city vibe, sit, relax w/a good Italian meal.

Enjoy your train to Schweiz. We traveled from there to Como/Bellagio, then Milano.

(We got tix for the Last Supper thru a tour group, but showed up & went inside w/o the group. Tour tix were all that were available & were much more expensive than from the site, but seeing the Cenacolo was #1 on my Milano list--no matter the cost.)
