Right now my itinerary has us arriving in Milan late Tuesday and leaving Saturday Morning. Do we really need 3 full days in Milan or is two enough?
Depends on what you want to see and do. Do you have a Last Supper reservation? You can build part of your stay around that. You can easily see the Duomo and Piazza area plus the Last Supper in a day and have time left to relax, shop, eat. Additional days could be devoted to museums you want to see, heavy duty shopping, or even a daytrip to Lake Como. Personally, we had an afternoon and evening (6:00 PM Last Supper res) in Milan and that was enough. It's fine, but there are other places I wanted to spend more time in. Ciao!
We plan on attending La Scala and doing the Last Supper. We don't have reservations yet. The trip isn't until October 2012. We're not big into shopping but will probably want to do a little.
We had the same itinerary as you, 3 full days, 4 nights and it was just enough to see everything. The last Supper, the castle, the duomo, and a day trip to Lake Como. Not sure what time of the year you will be there, and where you are staying, but we were there first part of July and it was hot hot! Which definitely took its toll on us with walking around. We had to cut 1 day short so we were glad we had that, but we did just come from the beach where it was relaxing and we could go swimming when it got too hot!
For La Scala, if you want to be sure of gettin gtickets, register on the website in advance and make sure you know when th etickets go on sale for your performance. We checked the website in advance to scout seating location, then went on right at midnight (9 am in Milan) on th eappointed day. To our chagrin, none of the seats we picked in advance were available. In fact, there were few seatw at all (most go by subscription to season ticket holders). We picked a box from what was left, made the mistake of checking the view from there, and it disappieared. Then we picked the next one and quickly put it in our cart and checked out. It took several tries and 2 different credit cards, but luckily we weren't timed out. The box seats were actually terrific and we had a wonderful time. We stayed near there (at Antica Locanda dei Mercanti) so we could walk there and back. This worked out well.
There is enough to do. We spent several hours at the Ambrosiana, and the castle has several rooms that don't show up on a tour, if that's the only way you can get the Last Supper tickets. Are you adding jetlag into the equation? I also spent a morning wandering looking at the stores in the Golden Quadrilateral; wished I had made time to see the canals ( who knew Milan once was a port?). You could make a day trip to Turin ( about 90 minutes each way) to the Egyptian Museum there, second best in the world. New art museum near the Duomo as well if you like modern.
