My daughter and her boyfriend will be coming to Italy first part of October. They fly into Milan and head to Varenna. They would like to check out Milan on their arrival day. What train/bus would they take to visit interesting sites from the airport, and then back to the train station to head to Varenna? thanks
Thank you. Yes, she went to Australia last year (14 hour flight) and is young enough that the jet lag doesn't affect her as much as it does me!! This is perfect!
Terri, Have your daughter and her boyfriend flown internationally before? It's important not to underestimate the effects of jet lag. There's NO WAY I'd be able to tour around Milan after a long international flight, although others may be able to do that. If they intend to sightsee on arrival in Milan, the easiest method to get from MXP to Milan would be to take either the Malpensa Express (train) or the Malpensa Shuttle (Bus) to Milano Centrale. There's a baggage storage there (at the street level floor as I recall) where they could leave their luggage while they're sightseeing. From Milano Centrale, they can take the Metro to the Duomo (Line 3, direction S. Donato) and have a look at the Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emmanuel, etc. When they've finished sightseeing, take the Metro back to Milano Centrale (Line 3, direction Maciachini) to connect with the train to Varenna. As I recall, trains to Varenna depart every two hours, and the trip is 1H:03M. It will be a Regionale, so DON'T forget to validate! Tell them to be ready to disembark promptly, as the train only stops at Varenna for about a minute. Happy travels!
Not sure how to get from airport to Milan, but I would recommend Milan as a way to spend a few hours outside to fight jet lag. Getting from the Duomo to the train station is real easy. They could check their bags at the train station while they sight see. I think they should do it.
There is Metro stop right at the train station (across the street) Very quick trip to get to the Duomo. They can walk, but if short of time, I would take the metro and have time to see the Duomo, go up on the roof, La Scala Opera is about 2 blocks
away and they have a great museum too.
