If you've been in and out of the Milan station recently, have you noticed any problems with migrant crowds? The Italian news feeds are talking about 400+ refugees from North Africa camped out there trying to find a way to Germany, etc. Wondering if this really is a problem for travelers or just the usual over-excited media trolling for readers.
Hi Susan, there are many migrants around Milano Central, but they stay camped in the parks nearby and are not a problem for travelers at all. No need to worry !
Susan, You will notice lots of African migrants all over Italy's larger cities. For the most part, they are not a problem but they "come out" at night to sell cheap toys which I found very annoying (little-lighted thing that fly into the air and totally disrupt the view). Also if it rains they can be a good source for ponchos and umbrellas. It is crazy the rain starts and they come out of nowhere.
A lot of them sell cheap sunglasses if it's sunny, then cheap umbrellas if it rains. I believe it's actually against the law to buy anything from them. They disappear quickly if anyone spots someone from the Guardia Di Finanza. http://www.metamagazine.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/guardia-di-finanza51.jpg
Mostly media hype. You'll be fine.
My late uncles, who were partisans during WW2 and were interned in German camps during that time, would be amazed that 70 years later, there would be thousands of people actually willing to be crowded in train cars headed to Germany. They used to tell me that they did everything possible to get off of those trains but the Germans wouldn't let them. They absolutely wanted to take them to Germany at all costs.
Thanks everyone for your comments. To Roberto's story, my first thought was that there's no end to human suffering. It was then and it is now.
I Think Susan was asking about the migrants that have arrived recently from Syria and Libya, they don't sell anything and are there just waiting to see what happens with their life. The p people who sell stuff are immigrants that have been here for a while and do that for a living, but a totally different thing.
The problem camp is at Como. Lots of police presence to prevent illegals on trains.
