Mid-November in Dolomites?

I'm currently in Venice and debating next steps for my itinerary. I've always wanted to go to the Dolomites but am concerned that 1) many places will be closed 2) hiking options will be limited due to weather and 3) without a car, many of the best spots will be inaccessible.

Has anyone traveled during this time of year and if so, do you have recommendations for which villages to visit?

Thank you!

Since you are in Venice, what are the weather conditions in the Dolomites now? The Val Gardena site said they had 10 cm of snow high up on the mountains last week, although they report no snow in the valleys. I'll be there in 3 weeks with the intent of skiing. None of the lifts are operating now. So unless you just want to go up and nose around, I'd give it a pass. There are half-hourly buses from Bolzano station to Castelrotto Monday to Friday and hourly daily.

I have been to the Val Gardena 3 times in summer and will go there in late December. We love Ortisei, but as you mention it is between seasons so while the town is cute and no doubt functioning, access to the high areas is limited at best. Check out the Val Gardena website. Might be something that appeals to you.

I also believe that any hotel who you call for a reservation will be happy to give an honest assessment of lift options, or lack thereof.

Thanks everyone for the advice. This forum is excellent! November in the Dolomites turns out to be not the greatest of ideas. I found a friend of a friend in Trento who is generously hosting me, and despite our best efforts to get out and hike, it's just pouring rain. In short, better to have come in October or December!

Thanks all, and be well,
