Metro Pass

Hi all! I am so excited to be going on my first trip to Rome in 1 month! I have been planning for 2 years and pre-planned extensively. My question is, we are going to purchase a 7 day metro pass, can I pre purchase these online? A car service will be taking us to our rental in San Giovanni area and I would like to take public transit from there but, not sure if I have to go somewhere specific to buy or can I buy ahead of time. Thanks for any and all info!

Hey!

No, as far as I know you cannot purchase a bus/Metro pass online. But, when you get to Rome, go to either Roma Termini station or to most any tabacchi shop--they're all over--and purchase a 7-day pass there for 24 Euro. Make sure you keep the receipt. First time you use the bus, make sure you validate each pass in the machine near the front of the bus. That starts the 'clock' on the weekly pass for you.

For subsequent rides on the bus, you can enter either at the front or on the side, no problem. On very rare occurrences, the gendarmes will come onto the bus and ask to see your pass and receipt of purchase, which you will show them.

You can buy from many places including at metro entrances, from vending machines and from tobacconist shops, though a 7 day pass is not available everywhere. Remember to validate in the ticket machine on the bus, tram or metro entrance on your first ride. You do not need to validate again, but always have it with you. The pass is good for the number of hours specified, not per calendar day. Have a wonderful trip!!

If you're flying into FCO airport, you can buy the 7 day pass there as well. There's a large tabacchi right next to or across from the tourist information office, as I recall.
