Last month we took a Liberty Ferry from Messina to Reggio di Calabria. Their ferry to Villa San Giovanni leaves from the same port. You do not need to purchase a ticket in advance. We bought our tickets upon arrival at the port, very easy to do. Buon Viaggio.
