Messina is a stop of ours in Sept on a cruise. We don't really like to do the ships excursions. What's the easiest way to get from Cruise terminal in Messina to the city center in Taormina? Book a tour, public transportation, etc? We are mainly interested in going to the city center there and just hanging around.

Did this exact thing in '09. We walked to the train station in Messina (not far from where are ship docked, maybe a 15-20 minute walk, though my memory is hazy.) Train ride was about an hour. Buy both outbound and inbound tickets at Messina, as the station for Taormina (Taormina-Giardini) is tiny and wasn't staffed when we were there, and the ticket machine was on the fritz. There is a bus that goes from the station up the hill to Taormina. It was an easy trip to do independently.

If you are mainly interested in going to the city center in Taormina and just hanging around have the cruise order you a cab to get there it takes 45 minutes
or take the train
