Need to get from Messina to Puglia -- would it be better to go via train or should we rent a car? How long of a car ride is it to Teranto area? Are the trains "local" (many stops) or high speed? Also any hotel recommendations in the area would be appreciated....thanks!

There are adequate trains, tho I doubt any are high-speed. Doewnload a map of Italy's train system. particularly those for Calabria,Basilicata and Puglia.
This will give you much more info.
Offhand, I judge the distance from Reggio to Taranto at about 150 miLet us know what you find and enjoy and what you think needs be avoided, as Sara and I are contemplating Sicily and the South for next year
