Taormina, a popular yet touristy destination, is not far. It can be reached also by train. I don’t find the city of Messina particularly compelling, so I wouldn’t bother to stay in town. Even closer, but across the strait (therefore you’d need to take a ferry) is the prettier and more interesting city of Reggio Calabria.

Taking a ferry to Reggio Calabria will allow you to visit the ancient Greek Riace Bronzes, two amazing life-size warriors that were recovered in the 1970's. The archaeological museum, hypogeum and Roman baths are all worth your time. turismo.reggiocal.it is a good website to find out more.

If you are interested in art the museo regionale in messina has two late caravaggio paintings.
