Merano, Venice, and Tuscany in the Fall - Where else?

This coming fall, we are planning to return to some of our favorites spots in Italy: Merano to visit friends, plus Venice and Tuscany. Since this trip will be in the fall rather than the spring (as previous visits were), I'm looking for suggestions as to best town(s) in Tuscany at that time of year - any special festivals? Also, any suggestions on an additional side trip, perhaps at end of vacation, either in southern Switzerland or Austria? Always good to add a new scene!

You did not say how many days you will be on this trip. As to other Tuscan towns-will you have a car or will you be using the train? Where are you flying into and out of so we can help with logistics.

Agree with previous comment that you need to provide some more details before we can give helpful suggestions.

Absent that, I would say that depending how late/early in the fall, in Tuscany your visit may coincide with the wine harvest. When you're in Merano you will be in the alps quite near the borders of Austria and Switzerland and to the southwest is the Italian alpine lake region. You could go to Davos if you wanted to get across the border into Switzerland, or Innsbruck if you wanted to visit Austria. Just be aware that winter storms can come early at that altitude, so you may need a plan B if the weather interferes.

We'll likely stay approx 2 weeks, the typical time for us (since we retired!), with minimum of 3 nights in any specific location. I haven't booked air flights yet. Previous trips included flight into Munich, then train to Venice, with rental car into Tuscany; flight into Rome, rental car through Tuscany with a swing by Florence to Venice and flight out; flights into and out of Venice, with car to Merano and stops en route in Soave, Lake Garda, and Dolomites. Have also been to Cortona (Tuscany cooking class awesome!), Siena, Modena (cheesemaking, wonderful), Cinque Terra area - ahhh the coastline, and Milan. The dates we are looking at this fall are between Sept 24 and Oct 18. But before booking, wanted to explore if a particular festival is recommended on certain dates - or some destination to not miss that we haven't thought of. Visiting a vineyard is one goal, plus getting more cheese. Then will try to figure out general itinerary before booking flights. Thanks again for any suggestions.
