Merano (South Tyrol): CartaFreccia and Recommend Agriturisimo?

We will be taking the train from Venice to Merano in last week in May ( but leave home mid-May). I read that you can apply for a CartaFreccia as a Senior and include a copy of your passport. Love to hear if anyone has done it recently and how long it took to get it back? :)

Any suggestions for Agriturisimos in Merano or other recommended accommodation besides Rennwegg114 that I saw recommended?

I know there are trains/buses. Has anyone rented a car and is it worth it for that short time? We leave from there to overnight in Milan before we fly home.
Thanks ever so much! :)

We enjoyed our time at Wohnhof in Algund, which is just north of Merano. It's an apple farm with a 700-year old wine tavern that was fun to experience with the owners. They do not speak English so we let the wine they make on the farm do the talking. :)
