Menaggio on Lake Como

We will be on Lake Como for 2 days in October, and have found an apartment very near Menaggio (town across lake from Bellagio). Is this a good area to stay in?

We will have a car. Thanks so much!

There is no bad place to stay on Lake Como (some may be better than others). With a car you will have easy access to the whole western side of the lake and you can easily take the ferry across to Bellagio or other lakeside destinations as time and interest permits.

We were on Lake Como a couple of weeks ago and stayed in Varenna but took a ferry to Menaggio. I think that it would be a great place to stay--especially if you have an apartment at a great price!

I love Varenna for everything but also I never have a car when thereeither. SInce you hAVE A car you will prob park it and take ferry around to the highlights of Lake Como. Bellagio, Varenna, Mennagio. But you can also drive to Lugano on Swiss border. If you like your rate it will be fine.Lodging can be expenisve on Lake Como once you see it you will know why. It Is stunningly beautiful and peaceful.

I stayed in Menaggio for 3 wonderful days last year. Hopefully you'll find a place to park your car, you won't need it, explore the lake the way everyone else does, by ferry boat or hydrofoil, the classic views of Lake Como in all the books are taken from boats in mid-lake between Varenna, Menaggio, and Bellagio. And don't even think about driving your car from Menaggio to Lugano, take the bus!

I drove the car from Menaggio to Switzerland and of course the shortest route was through Lugano...there are portions of that road that are so narrow opposing traffic can't pass...I'm pretty good on narrow roads, and I zipped around the Alps without fear...but I tell you there were moments on the road along the lake where I thought we were going to touch the oncoming Buses. Seriously, we had to come to a complete stop and manuever slowly past a bus (pulling in both side mirrors)..a wall on the right gave us less than 3 inches of clearance...the bus passed by with only 2 inches....I seen similar close calls on the Amalfi coast...but this was absolutely the tightest fit I ever tried.
