Men's clothing for Sicily in the Fall

Im booked for the off-season Sicily tour. The temperatures look similar to here on the California coast, but with a bit more rain. First, does it rain hard in Sicily, like I experience in Hawaii, or more drizzle and light showers, like at home? Is a real raincoat necessary?

Fashion question. In my 60's, I still wear a ball cap, tee or Hawaiian shirt, shorts and skate shoes or flip flops. Obviously, this may make me look as out of place as I have seen Japanese tourists in Hawaii wearing urban Tokyo fashions. Sicily is not Rome or Milan. Are shorts and tee shirts worn by men there? I do not want to dress more formally than the locals, basically not stand out.

The rain in fall is usually light to moderate, but sometimes wind driven. In most situations you'd be fine with a lightweight breathable jacket with a hood. Perhaps add a fleece vest to your luggage for mountains tops or near the sea. Sicilians are proud and conservative dressers. Your standard outfit would make you stand out, though you don't need to go high fashion either - you can keep the baseball cap. I think it's admirable that you're trying to avoid the uncaring tourist stereotype.

We were there mid to end of September and sweated buckets. All the men in our group, a group from France, not Americans, wore shorts with short sleeve shirts. Easier to wash and dry than t-shirts. You might want to keep the Hawaiian shirt for your hotel, but really, who cares. They know we're all tourists. As for the feet, you probably need more support than flip flops on cobblestones and Greek ruins. How about sandals.
