I used to pride myself on traveling light and was planning on carry on only for my upcoming trip (LA to Rome on Alitalia and then commuter flight to Venice also on Alitalia.) After reading the regs my husband thinks I'm crazy. If anyone has any recent experience can you please tell me if they weigh the second bag? Looks like the first has to be under 10lbs so I'm thinking only a nylon duffel will get me there and leave a margin for actually packing. Guessing the first goes overhead and the second under the seat. Giving up on wheels for sure. Help. All advice welcomed but I can't promise to be cheerful about the limits!
A few months ago in Amsterdam both my carryon and personal item were weighed.
Hi Cat,
The weight for a carry on for Alitalia is 8kg, which is equal to 17 lbs. I took a short flight from Palermo to Rome in April. They weighed my carry on luggage, but not my 'under the seat' bag. Pack light and you should be ok. Have a good trip!
They weigh only the bag that will be put overhead. It's a safety thing, in case it falls. They don't weigh the one that goes under the seat in front of you. I'm not sure why you think the overhead bag has to be under 10 lbs. Can you provide a link? This link shows that it is 8 kg.
