Meds into Rome

How much of a hassle does one run into at customs bringing a few bottles of medicine into Italy? Does one need to have a written prescription to back up every bottle of med you carry in? I would be grateful for your input and stories...thanks.

You will be fine don't worry about it. Just make sure it's in a prescription bottle with the label. They won't really check your luggage.

They are much more likely to look here in the USA. Customs in Italy directly from the US get a quick look, at best. Most always, you get no interest shown in your stuff.

Just make certain that any prescription drugs are in their labeled bottles and any OTC drugs are contained within their own labeled packaging. They won't check your luggage coming in anyway...

I'm with Steve--on several trips to Rome, no one bothered with my pill PAC--incidentally, you can probably save a bundle on your prescriptions at the pharmacies if you know the generic names.

I agree with everyone else; you shouldn't have any problems. I take a lot of supplements and I had all my supplements grouped into little plastic bags (1 for each day for breakfast, lunch & dinner) & I was concerned that they would look at all my pills & ask questions but they didn't bat an eye & I never had any problems.

The main reason to keep your medication in labeled bottles/containers (and this goes for everyone) is that if you should be come ill or have an accident and become incapacitated, medical professionals will need to know what meds you are taking as this may help them in your treatment/diagnosis/autopsy(hee-hee). Presenting a baggy full of pills "a fruit cocktail" will not help them one bit. Also, having a labeled container will help you if you run out of a medication while abroad and need a physician to write a prescription for you.

I have a Tylenol bottle that I fit with an assortment of meds I might need while in the air. I usually take a couple of valium and for emergency I pack a few vicodin. I pack this in my backpack with all my camera gear. Years ago I just had it it my pocket when I went through the metal detector. never had a problem.
Are the pharmacies a s strict and regulated in Europe as they are here in the US? Can I get pain meds just by simply walking in and asking for them?

Great question. I was in Rome with my parents in March and I suffer from OCD, Tourettes and schizoaffectice disorder and had atelast 10 bottles of pills in my luggage and they didn't say a word. If you do need a refill like I needed one just bring a lost of your meds with the generic name on it and you will be fine.

You can bring medicine in prescription bottles.
